Science Research Initiative (SRI)

Science Research Initiative (SRI)

The Science Research Initiative (SRI) at the University of Utah’s College of Science serves to integrate incoming first-year and transfer students directly into discovery-based scientific research. Unlike traditional models where undergraduate research opportunities are often limited to junior or senior years, the SRI connects students with faculty-led research teams, known as “research streams,” from their very first day on campus. This team-based approach requires no prior research experience, fosters valuable scientific skills, encourages critical thinking, and builds a strong community among students and faculty. The initiative not only provides hands-on technical expertise, it also helps students explore scientific fields and career paths early in their academic journey, preparing them for future success in research labs, industry, or graduate studies.

Funding for the SRI alleviates financial barriers that often prevent students, especially those working part-time, from engaging in research. Beyond direct student support, funds to the SRI fuel high-impact undergraduate research experiences, provide resources for faculty to lead research streams, and bolster the overall infrastructure of the program. This investment helps to cultivate a skilled STEM workforce for Utah’s growing economy, provides invaluable mentorship opportunities, and facilitates scientific discovery by enabling faculty to engage a larger, well-trained pool of undergraduate researchers in their projects.
