For three decades, the Center for Native Excellence and Tribal Engagement (NETE) at the University of Utah has been a steadfast champion for Native students, faculty, and communities. Grounded in cultural affirmation, academic support, and meaningful partnership, NETE serves as both a home for Indigenous students and a vital bridge between the university and tribal nations across Utah.
Our Vision
For students to discover their passion, people, and purpose while advancing Native excellence as a driver of new knowledge, innovation, and societal impact.
Our Mission in Action
Through programs rooted in cultural values, NETE works to:
- Strengthen cultural awareness across campus by fostering understanding and respect for Native histories and perspectives.
- Build community connections through outreach, collaboration, and partnerships with tribal nations throughout the state.
- Recruit and retain Native students by increasing enrollment and graduation rates.
Programs Offered by NETE include:
- CIRCLE Program (Centering Indigenous Reciprocity, Culture, Leadership, and Engagement): Native undergraduate students grow as scholars and leaders through mentorship, service projects, cultural engagement, and professional development—honoring their traditions while supporting their academic and personal success.
- Elder-in-Residence: A community elder provides spiritual, cultural, and emotional support for students, fostering a welcoming environment where Indigenous perspectives and lifeways are celebrated and strengthening the bond between tribal communities and the university.
- University of Utah Pow Wow: This vibrant annual gathering brings together tribal members from across the Intermountain West to honor and celebrate the songs, dances, and traditions that unite Native communities.
Together, these programs reflect the Center’s guiding principle: “I belong here.” By supporting the Center for Native Excellence and Tribal Engagement, donors help ensure that every Native student who steps onto campus feels that truth and has access to the community, resources, and opportunities needed to succeed. Every gift, no matter the size, fuels NETE’s mission and helps us serve more students. Your contribution supports mentorship, cultural programming, academic resources, and the welcoming spaces that make belonging possible.
Join us in creating pathways to success for the next generation of Indigenous scholars and leaders!
