Center for Human Toxicology

Center for Human Toxicology

For more than 50 years, the University of Utah’s Center for Human Toxicology (CHT) has been a leader in understanding how drugs and environmental chemicals affect human health. Established in 1973 as the first independent facility in the US to combine toxicology instruction with analytical services and research, CHT continues to play a vital role in supporting scientific discovery, improving public safety, and training the next generation of pharmacologists and toxicologists.

CHT delivers state-of-the-art, on-demand, and custom bioanalytical services to academic partners, government agencies, and collaborators worldwide. It is internationally recognized for developing and applying cutting-edge assays—primarily using advanced mass spectrometry technology—to quantify therapeutic drugs, illicit substances, and emerging toxicants in biological (or other) specimens. In recent years, CHT has expanded its capabilities by developing a comprehensive platform for delivering and evaluating inhaled substances, genetic testing for precision medicine, and expertise in pharmacokinetics, optimizing treatments of conditions across the spectrum of patients. These and other innovations support essential work in forensics, clinical research, drug development, and environmental/public health.

CHT is part of the University of Utah College of Pharmacy and is deeply committed to education and training. Faculty provide hands-on research experiences and classroom instruction for graduate and professional students, preparing future scientists for impactful careers.

Philanthropic support is essential to sustaining CHT’s mission. Gifts strengthen laboratory infrastructure, expand research capacity, and support innovative teaching and training opportunities. Investments directly enable scientific breakthroughs, enhance our ability to respond to emerging challenges, and ensure that CHT remains a critical resource for Utah and communities beyond.
