Department of Philosophy

Department of Philosophy

The University of Utah Department of Philosophy offers a comprehensive suite of courses taught in the analytic tradition in each subfield of philosophy: value theory (ethics, political philosophy, social philosophy, and aesthetics), metaphysics (including philosophy of mind and philosophy of religion), epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, history of philosophy, logic, and feminist philosophy.

As scholars of philosophy, we believe that a diverse faculty with a wide range of scholarly expertise is essential to the discovery of new knowledge and to the formation of interdisciplinary research programs. The department maintains a diverse approach to philosophy, which is reflected in our distinctive research strengths: philosophy of biology, applied ethics, and philosophy of games. We are committed to developing within students a rigorous understanding of the main problems in philosophy and the essential capabilities for virtually any career—verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and reading comprehension.

We offer undergraduate majors in philosophy, philosophy of science, and medical humanities, along with minors in philosophy, applied ethics, cognitive science, and a certificate in logic. At the graduate level, we offer both Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees and a PhD in philosophy.
