Kursar-Coley Endowment for Ecological Research and Graduate Student Training

Kursar-Coley Endowment for Ecological Research and Graduate Student Training

The Kursar-Coley Endowment for Ecological Research and Graduate Student Training supports graduate students conducting field studies in ecology, evolution, and organismal biology. The fund was established by Phyllis Coley, PhD, distinguished professor emerita in the School of Biological Sciences who, with her late-husband Thomas Kursar, PhD, built a legendary research and conservation program in communities throughout Central and South America. The couple blended Dr. Coley’s training in ecology and Dr. Kursar’s in biophysics to work in multiple countries in both the Amazon and the African Congo, as well as in Panama, Borneo, and Malaysia. Beyond field research, they helped to create economic opportunities for communities in Central America through bioprospecting for novel pharmaceutical discoveries.
