Roy E. McDonald and Family Scholarship

The Roy E. McDonald and Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship funded by the family of Roy E. McDonald, one of Salt Lake City’s preeminent physicians. The scholarship’s purpose is to help defray the cost of higher education for students with financial need in the Department of Chemistry.

Born in Erie, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1921, Dr. McDonald showed signs of scholarship from his earliest years. After attending the Pennsylvania State University, he graduated from Temple Medical School in 1945. He served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps before settling in Salt Lake City, where he was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Utah. His interests varied widely from research in drug evaluation in schizophrenic patients to mineral metabolism. He practiced medicine in Salt Lake City from 1953 to 1988, serving as president, chief of staff, and medical education coordinator at St. Mark’s Hospital. He is remembered for his lifelong dedication to health care and the education of future physicians.
