Schwartz-Shea & Yanow Dissertation Fellowship for Interpretive Research in Political Science

Schwartz-Shea & Yanow Dissertation Fellowship for Interpretive Research in Political Science

Schwartz-Shea & Yanow Dissertation Fellowship for Interpretive Research honors the long-term collaboration of Peregrine Schwartz-Shea and Dvora Yanow while recognizing doctoral students’ adoption of interpretive methodologies in their dissertation projects. Established through an endowed fellowship, its purpose is to support political science students whose dissertation research employs interpretive methodologies and their associated methods in the conduct of empirical research.

Interpretive methodologies seek holistic scientific explanations of political phenomena by focusing on the meaning-making of individuals, communities, and organizations. Rather than viewing political events through a single lens, this approach explores the varied lived experiences, multiple perspectives, and dynamic interactions that shape public life. Through methods such as participant observation, ethnography, in-depth interviewing, and narrative or discourse analysis, doctoral students develop rich, context-driven research that broadens our understanding of politics, governance, and society while contributing to methodological diversity within the social sciences.

Your support empowers doctoral students to pursue innovative research that deepens our understanding of political life, public institutions, and the communities they serve, providing them with the time, resources, and flexibility to fully engage in their dissertation work.

Every gift to the Schwartz-Shea & Yanow Dissertation Fellowship is an investment in scholarly excellence and the future of political science. By supporting this fellowship, you help emerging scholars pursue ambitious questions and contribute meaningful research to their field.
