SPARC Environmental Justice Lab

The SPARC Environmental Justice Lab Fund helps students turn learning into action by supporting hands-on research, community partnerships, and pathways into careers dedicated to environmental and social justice.

At the University of Utah, the SPARC Environmental Justice (EJ) Lab is a collaborative space where students, faculty, and community partners come together to tackle real-world challenges in social and environmental health. Instead of learning only in the classroom, students work directly with communities to better understand issues and help create solutions that reflect lived experiences.

Student Pathways are at the heart of the Lab. This fund helps provide stipends, research support, and professional development so students can fully participate in meaningful, long-term projects. These experiences often grow into theses, dissertations, and career opportunities, while also giving students the chance to mentor others and build lasting skills in leadership and collaboration.

The fund also supports Action Research across focus areas like food systems, water access and quality, air quality, urban unsheltered homelessness, educational equity, and energy sovereignty. Students and community partners work side by side on projects that produce both academic research and practical, easy-to-share resources. Donations help cover essentials like fieldwork, community meetings, and materials that make this work accessible and impactful.

Just as important is the Lab’s commitment to Critical Community Engagement. Projects are designed to be inclusive, respectful, and responsive to community needs, with community members recognized as co-creators in the research process. Funding helps ensure these partnerships are equitable and meaningful.

By giving to the SPARC Environmental Justice Lab Fund, you’re helping students gain hands-on experience while making a real difference in communities.
