Tanner Dance has been offering high-quality and nationally recognized arts-in-education programs since the 1960s. These programs are offered to classrooms and teachers at free or heavily discounted rates with support from people like you and through generous grants from the Utah State Board of Education Professional Outreach in Public Schools (POPS), Salt Lake County Zoo Arts and Parks, and other arts organizations.
The Side-by-Side (SBS) Artist Residency Program, which offers weekly dance classes for students in Utah elementary schools, places teaching artists and musicians in elementary school classrooms to integrate state and national standards in dance with classroom subjects including math, language arts, social studies, and science. The program currently offers weekly dance classes and master classes to more than 7,700 students in Utah elementary schools, 50 percent of whom attend Title I or borderline schools.
Students participating in the Tanner Dance Arts-in-Education Program learn movement principles and create dances, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, collaborate with peers, become more self-aware of their bodies, improve musicality and rhythm, gain strength and energy, and have a higher level of engagement throughout the school day. Many of the students in the program are English language learners and students with disabilities. Dance provides nonverbal means of communication through which they can succeed.
Teachers gain resources to continue integrated-arts learning through the Professional Development Program, which offers a variety of training and mentoring opportunities to help educators develop new ways to stimulate learning in the arts and make connections between the various art forms and other curriculum areas.
Your gift to the Tanner Dance Arts-in-Education Program supports our Side‐By‐Side Artist Residency Program, lecture demonstrations, free school matinee performances, and professional development for school teachers. Thank you for your support.
If you would like to make a greater impact on students, you can set up a recurring/monthly gift to this program. Recurring gifts aid in providing consistent funding for resources that are not covered by tuition or external funding sources and enable us to plan for the future with greater financial stability and flexibility.
