The Jana Ward Breakthroughs in Adaptive Engineering Endowment

A lasting legacy of resilience, innovation, and independence. This endowment empowers engineering students to create breakthrough adaptive technologies—opening new worlds of possibility for TRAILS participants and beyond.

The Jana Ward Breakthroughs in Adaptive Engineering Endowment celebrates a remarkable life—and fuels a remarkable future. A proud University of Utah alumna and TRAILS participant, Jana has inspired her community through courage, creativity, and her unstoppable spirit of adventure.

This permanent fund supports engineering students at the U as they partner with the TRAILS program to design and develop groundbreaking adaptive sports technologies. These student-led innovations will help create a world where independence, mobility, and outdoor adventure are accessible to everyone—regardless of injury or disability.

Through capstone project scholarships, mentorship from the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital team, and hands-on design opportunities, students will learn how to turn vision into impact. The results: smarter adaptive technology, greater access, and more freedom for people with complex physical support needs.

Jana’s legacy is one of breaking boundaries. With your support, this endowment will continue her story—empowering engineers, advancing adaptive technology, and opening new doors for the next generation of athletes, adventurers, and innovators.
