Utah Center for Vocology

Utah Center for Vocology

Since making the University of Utah its home in 2009, the Utah Center for Vocology (UCV) has advanced groundbreaking research at the intersection of arts and health while providing world-class continuing education for voice professionals, pedagogues, clinicians, surgeons, and therapists.

The knowledge we generate improves both the quality of life and quality of livelihood for people around the world who depend on science-based voice habilitation and rehabilitation.

History of UCV

Founded in 1990 at the University of Iowa, the UCV grew out of the National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS). This research consortium was established by preeminent voice scientist Dr. Ingo Titze. Educated as a physicist and engineer, Dr. Titze has applied rigorous scientific principles to a lifelong passion for the human voice.

His research spans the biomechanics of human tissues, acoustic phonetics, speech science, voice disorders, professional voice, music acoustics, and computer simulation of voice. Widely regarded as a founder of the field of vocology—a specialty within speech-language pathology—Dr. Titze and his colleagues helped define vocology as “the science and practice of voice habilitation.”

In 2009, NCVS relocated to the University of Utah and functions as an independent nonprofit organization that promotes scientific and clinical innovation in voice and speech by providing comprehensive databases and algorithms for analysis and simulation of human and animal vocalization. The UCV was named and continues the original mission of NCVS through original research and education.

Today, our experienced team collaborates with researchers at the University of Utah, across the United States, and around the world to investigate vocal anatomy, acoustics, and vocalization at the intersection of arts and health.

Continuing Education Through SVI

The Summer Vocology Institute (SVI) is internationally renowned and has graduated more than 500 students since its inception. SVI-trained vocologists work throughout the United States and in more than 20 countries on six continents, applying their knowledge in hospitals, clinics, voice studios, and the stage.

This intensive, seven-week graduate-level program offers hands-on learning experiences and direct instruction from a dozen of the world’s most recognized experts in voice science.
