The mission of the Veterans Support Center is to improve and enhance the individual and academic success of veterans, service members, and their family members who attend the university; to assist them in their transition from military life to higher education; to help them receive the benefits they earned; and to serve as a liaison between the student veteran community and the university. The award-winning center is a “one stop shop” for military-affiliated students to find services, support, advocacy, and camaraderie. Some of the VSC services and resources include VA benefits advising, counseling, computer and printing resources, tutoring, peer support, career coaching, and a study hall and lounge. We are honored to support those who answered our nation’s call and their family members at the U.
The Veterans Support Center has identified the following funding priorities for the Imagine New Heights campaign:
- Scholarships: Only 60% of U Vets have the GI Bill, and it does not cover the entire cost of education for those that receive it. Scholarship funding in support of student veterans is extremely limited and greatly needed.
- Emergency Aid: Unexpected financial crises sometimes occur despite responsible financial planning and management. Emergency funds allow the center to provide students with the support needed to overcome temporary financial crises so that they can continue to succeed at the U.
- General Gift Fund: The general gift fund enables the center to provide additional resources and services to support student veterans’ success, such as free tutoring, free printing, social and professional activities, and a textbook library.
- Veterans Day Fund: Since 1998, the U’s Veterans Day Committee has selected Utah veterans to be honored in a formal commemoration ceremony. In 2018, the U established a weeklong series of events honoring veterans. Vet Week includes the commemoration ceremony, an arts event, a panel discussion, and more. The Veterans Day fund enables the U to continue to demonstrate its appreciation for Utah’s military veterans and service members.
