DesignBuildBLUFF exudes the Chinese proverb variously translated: “If one merely hears it, he forgets; if he sees it, then he might remember; but if he actually does it, he will truly and wholly understand.” The non-profit program affords first-year University of Utah graduate students of architecture a real-world hands-on experience by physically constructing a home for a Navajo family which the students themselves have collaboratively designed. The often desolate desert of the Navajo nation offers the challenge to experiment with alternative materials and building practices. Essentially, the area is gridless, often devoid of any hope of utility hook-ups to solve the most pressing need of our day: the search for a sustainable future for our species on this planet.
