Ireland, professor and chair, in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, discussed nature as an important source of new drugs for treating human diseases and highlighted studies from his lab with sponges from the tropical Pacific Ocean as a source of new cancer drugs. Dr. Ireland’s research focuses on the discovery of anti-tumor agents from natural product sources including marine invertebrate animals, tropical plants, and fungi.
