The Yellowstone Super Volcano: Past, Present, and Future

Lecture by Dr. Robert B. Smith, Professor, Department of Geology and Geophysics

Date: April 1, 2009

Yellowstone is rooted in some of Earth’s most violent forces and is the most significant continental volcanic hot spot. These forces have produced the magnificent scenery of Yellowstone National Park, its geysers, largest volcano in North America, and a killer earthquake. Dr. Robert B. Smith presented the science behind these features and updates on seismic images of its deep mantle plume and crustal magma chamber.
