Make an impact at the University of Utah

Echo Warner, PhD, MPH, grew up as the fifth youngest of six children on a remote farm above Altamont in the Uintah Basin.

For her, this was just the way things were. She relied on herself, her siblings, and her mountain for entertainment. Everything was a 30-minute drive away, from childhood friends to the nearest hospital in Roosevelt. Along with the pain, she saw the beauty and spirit of rural communities, like when a five- year-old girl—just two grades below Warner—was diagnosed with cancer.

For years, Altamont community members fundraised to pay health care, travel, and food expenses for the girl and her family. That experience taught Warner that rural communities are bound by both blood and camaraderie. It inspired her to pursue a career in cancer research, which she does today as an assistant professor at the University of Utah College of Nursing (CON).

As a new faculty member at the CON, she quickly got involved with the Family Caregiving Collaborative, a statewide initiative connecting caregivers, researchers, and health professionals to improve support for families managing illness. Through her research, mentorship, and community engagement at the CON, Warner bridges the gap between rural isolation and access to care. Her work shows that science and compassion can go hand in hand. It also helps ensure that families facing cancer are not alone, that caregivers have the support they need, and that the next generation of scholars from rural places like Altamont can see a path forward in science and health care.

Through every visit home, the resources she creates, and student she mentors, Warner extends the hand she once wished for, leaving a lasting impact far beyond the mountains of her childhood.

Sebastian Morales’s passion for biomedical engineering is rooted in something deeply personal: a desire to help people live longer, healthier lives.

When he was a child, Morales’s grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. She was treated and survived, but his aunt—who was later diagnosed with the same form of cancer—unfortunately did not. “I serve as my team’s design engineer, and this whole experience has drawn me closer to my goal of helping improve lives around the world through medical technology,” he says. “If our project is successful, we have the potential to help lower-income people in this country and throughout the world.”

Morales’s personal mission reflects a broader philosophy that has shaped his academic journey: talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not. For Morales, scholarships have unlocked endless opportunities—transforming not only his life but countless others.

Today, Morales maintains a 4.0 GPA while balancing a robust schedule of research and extracurricular activities, an accomplishment he feels is rare within the engineering disciplines. He credits his many financial awards—the Ivory Housing Scholarship, the Herschel J. Saperstein Scholarship, and the Barbara Hancock Snyder Endowed Scholarship—for giving him the freedom to fully embrace his experience at the U.
